The starter will officially be revealed on Saturday

UNLV released a depth chart ahead of Saturday’s game and the starting quarterback was revealed. UNLV’s depth chart had Doug Brumfield or Harrison Bailey listed as the starter. This likely means the starter will not be determined until later in the week or on Saturday.

Brumfield’s name was listed above Bailey’s name, which likely meant that he had a slight edge over Bailey. The most compelling part of this quarterback controversy was the quarterback who was not listed at the top of the depth chart. That quarterback was sophomore quarterback Cameron Friel.

Friel saw significant playing time in 2021 and was expected to compete for the starting job in 2022. As it turned out, Friel did not end up winning the battle and he was placed third in the depth chart.

With Friel’s spot as the third-string quarterback determined, it will be important to see who trots out to start the game against Idaho State. If it is Brumfield, it will be his sixth game played.

On the contrary, Bailey could be in line to make his first start for UNLV. Bailey, a former Tennessee transfer, came to UNLV in January. He joined the program with the intent of becoming the top quarterback. Depending on when he plays on Saturday, he could be UNLV’s starting quarterback.

Head coach Marcus Arroyo announced in a press conference on Monday that Brumfield and Bailey will share reps with the first-team during practice this week. The starter could be a game-time decision for Arroyo. He also noted that Friel was not “far behind” Brumfield and Bailey.

UNLV could play all three quarterbacks throughout the season. With Brumfield and Bailey still battling it out for the starting spot, the position could be up for grabs a few weeks into the season when Friel makes up ground on the two. No one’s job is secure.

This will be a position battle to pay attention to. The starter in Week 0 might not be the starter at the end of the season.
