What should we expect from a Brian Kelly offense?

With the hire of Brian Kelly, how much of a change in offensive philosophy will we see for the LSU Tigers?

One major question with the hire of Brian Kelly will be who are his assistants going to be? More importantly, who will be the offensive coordinator? The offense was a major concern throughout the season. Once Kayshon Boutte went down with an injury against Kentucky, the offense slowed way down. There was a noticeable lack of explosive plays and the play of the quarterbacks left a lot to be desired.

The current Notre Dame offensive coordinator is Tommy Rees, a former Fighting Irish quarterback. It is very likely that he will not follow Kelly to the Bayou. This season the Irish averaged 35.2 points per game (21st in FBS). That is a full touchdown more per game than what LSU produced under Jake Peetz and DJ Mangas. We will get into potential candidates in the near future. But first, what kind of offense will we see?

Nick Shepkowski of Fighting Irish Wire broke it down.

  • Elite offensive line
  • Elite tight ends – not just pass catchers but throwback in a sense that he’ll go heavy on you in his own territory and not just on the goal line
  • running backs have turned into a real nice group over the years but that’s because of him hiring Lance Taylor as RB coach. The guy is a legit star when you look at his resume.
  • Kelly’s ability to hire staff members are about as good as it gets outside Tuscaloosa
  • Think of the talent LSU traditionally has at receiver…and now think of the polar opposite of that
