What should the Dolphins do with all of their Day 3 draft picks?

With the news confirmed yesterday that the Miami Dolphins were indeed receiving an extra two selections in the 2020 NFL Draft for their losses in last year’s free agency window, the Dolphins’ official tally for draft picks sits at 14. That whopping number is comprised of six picks in the first 70 selections and another 8 on the 3rd and final day of this year’s NFL Draft.

But with that many picks at Miami’s disposal, the question now becomes what the team should do with them? The Dolphins will, of course, cash many of them in for players — but with Day 3 selections so often serving as unofficial lottery tickets, the Dolphins should consider making use of their late picks in other ways. How exactly?

Bundle them together to create more picks earlier in the order.

The Dolphins’ are facing six picks in the first 70 selections and then potentially no picks at all over the next 70. But Miami will have the power to change that based on how aggressively they want to bundle picks together. Miami’s next best pick after the early 3rd round comes as a late 4th-rounder — a compensatory pick awarded to the team for their loss of Ja’Wuan James. Miami could feasibly package that pick, along with one of their three 5th-round picks, to close the gap between selections and ensure the team does not miss out on the notable depth that this class has to offer.

Miami, if able to secure another pick inside the top-100 or so, would be getting an additional player that (in an average draft) would be selected 25-30 spots earlier. Yes, this class is that good.

And so that now looms as a unique opportunity for Miami, who arguably has more picks than they know what to do with. The best solution to that problem? Pair them together to create fewer, better picks in the order.
