What is the San Antonio Spurs’ biggest need at the looming 2024 NBA trade deadline? According to Bleacher Report NBA analyst Andy Bailey, it’s a floor general. “The … Spurs already have a solid point guard in Tre Jones, but Gregg Popovich has just been reluctant to play him heavy minutes alongside Victor Wembanyama (in spite of plenty of evidence that it helps the rookie star),” writes Bailey.
“The front office might just have to force its coach’s hand by acquiring a higher-profile 1 like Dejounte Murray (who’s reportedly been a target),” adds the NBA analyst. “The ‘Jeremy Sochan at point guard’ experiment was fine to try for a bit.”
“If it had worked, San Antonio’s size and positional versatility would’ve been nightmarish.”

“But now that we know that Wembanyama is already ready to compete for wins, it’s time to surround him with more traditional talent, like a point guard who can set him up for some easier looks,” writes Bailey.
We like the idea of a dedicated floor general for the Spurs, but think a better fit in terms of age makes sense for the Spurs — perhaps a Malcolm Brogdon deal with the Portland Trail Blazers might split the difference?
