Assessing Raiders’ running back need ahead of free agency

Starters: Josh Jacobs, Alec Ingold (FB)

Backups: Jalen Richard, Mark Thompson, William Stanback

Free agents: DeAndre Washington, Isaiah Crowell, Rod Smith

Jacobs was arguably the brightest spot on this Raiders team last season and that’s saying a lot considering the many contributions they got from their 2019 rookie class. He ran for 1150 yards and 7 touchdowns in 13 appearances before his shoulder injury cut his season short.

Fellow rookie Ingold led the way as a blocker and was quite a find as an undrafted free agent. Jalen Richard was re-signed to be the receiving threat out of the backfield.

Condition: Unstable

The Raiders are obviously in good hands with jacobs as the feature back. What this team needs is a complement to him. Ideally, it would be a big bruiser who can punish and soften up the defense for him as well as punch the ball over the goal line and in short-yardage. Though simply having another option back there to spell Jacobs would be welcome.

DeAndre Washington replaced Jacobs late last season, but he is headed for free agency and the team could use an upgrade for him anyway. Re-signing Isaiah Crowell could be a good idea. There are a few good options headed for the free-agent market. Or they could wait for the draft. But make no mistake, an addition at running back is a necessity.
