What condition the position is in: Assessing Raiders need at center

With free agency about six weeks away, it’s time to check in on the Raiders’ center position to give it a condition of either Strong, Stable, Unstable, Serious, or Critical.

Starter: Rodney Hudson
Backup: Andre James, Erik Magnuson
Free agents: None

Not much left to be said about Rodney Hudson. He has long been and remains consistently one of the best centers in the league. Oh, and he doesn’t miss games (knock on wood). He didn’t miss a single snap last season. And that’s the third time he’s done that in six seasons with the Raiders. One other time, he missed exactly one snap the entire season.

Gruden likes former undrafted tackle Andre James as the backup center. He plays primarily on special teams and there have been no issues with his work there.

Condition: Strong

Hudson is still just 31 years of age and has several years left on his second contract with the Raiders. James has one more year on his rookie contract at which point they could just bring him back on a tender. Positions don’t get much stronger than this.
