Colin Kaepernick is a trending topic in the sports world. Even President Donald Trump believes the former San Francisco 49ers quarterback deserves a second chance in the NFL.
Odds-makers have already presented the odds, and Barry Werner from the Touchdown Wire has tabulated them for each team.
The Houston Texans have the third-best odds to sign Kaepernick at 4-1. Only the Baltimore Ravens at 2-1 and the Seattle Seahawks at 5-2 have better odds to sign the former 2011 second-round pick from Nevada.
Much like Kansas City, the starter in Houston (Deshaun Watson) won’t be going anywhere unless he eventually decides to leave as a free agent. The other names are A.J. McCarron, Alex McGough and Nick Tiano. None figure to become household names as starters. McCarron hangs around and is best remembered for his years at Alabama. Odds: 4-1
Coach Bill O’Brien likes McCarron for what he brings to the quarterback room; it goes beyond what McCarron could bring as a backup, which has been immaterial action since 2019.
If the Texans were to sign Kaepernick, it would be a little different compared to 2018-19 when the club had Joe Webb. Though designated as the third quarterback on the roster, Webb played a part on the special teams unit. With the NFL increasing the active roster to 55 men for the regular season, there may be enough wiggle room for the Texans to keep a third quarterback on the roster and not have it impact their other positions.
Whoever signs Kaepernick will have to work with the possible atrophy in skills that have occurred over the past three seasons. Though Kaepernick has kept himself in shape following his last season in the NFL in 2016, he hasn’t been able to keep himself in game shape, a prospect that no athlete can maintain if they are away from the sport.
