Speaking to the media for the first time since July, Clemson defensive coordinator Wes Goodwin gave an update on defensive end Xavier Thomas’ injury on Monday.
According to Goodwin, Thomas will miss four to six weeks with a foot injury he sustained during Saturday’s practice. Goodwin didn’t specify what the injury was or which foot it was but added that Thomas is “in a great mental state” despite the circumstances.
“It’s an unfortunate setback, but he’s got the right mindset, and we’ll respond and get him back early in the year,” Goodwin said.
Until Thomas returns, Goodwin said it’ll be more of a three-man rotation at defensive end, with competition for Thomas’ spot likely to occur right up until Clemson’s opener against Georgia Tech.
“I’m excited to see those younger guys get opportunities to go out there and show their summer of work, growth and potential,” Goodwin said.
Thomas finished last year with 21 total tackles (6.5 for loss), 4.5 sacks and two forced fumbles.
In his four years at Clemson, he has a combined 87 tackles, 13 sacks and four forced fumbles.
