We’re on to Tom Brady vs. Bill Belichick – which is going to be REALLY awkward/awesome

Brady vs. Belichick. This is going to be fun. And so awkward.

This is the online version of our morning newsletter, The Morning WinSubscribe to get irreverent and incisive sports stories, delivered to your mailbox every morning.

Yes, there’s one more game to go in Week 3 and it’s a fun NFC East matchup tonight between the Eagles and Cowboys but we’re really on to a big Week 4 game and I can’t wait for it.

I’m talking, of course, about Tom Brady returning to Foxborough, Ma. to face his former team, the New England Patriots, and his former coach, Bill Belichick, since the two sides “parted ways” after the 2019 season.

I say “parted ways” in quotes because it feels like it should be in quotes. It feels like too soft of a term to explain what happened to that relationship but I also don’t want to get too deep into what happened to that relationship because that is between them and I’m a gentleman.

I’ll now wait a second for your golf claps.

OK, we’re back.

NBC, which will air the game Sunday night, debuted a perfect ad last night for the reunion that featured Adele’s legendary song “Hello” with tremendous shots of Brady and Belichick throughout it. Whoever made that ad should get an Emmy and an Oscar and an ESPY and whatever else awards are out there because it was brilliant.

But back to football. Belichick basically decided he didn’t want to and couldn’t spend a lot of money on Brady, especially at his age and Brady was set free to find a new team to lead.

So far that has worked out really well for Brady, who won his seventh Super Bowl last year, and not so great for Belichick, who missed the playoffs last year and is 1-2 this year after yesterday’s loss to the Saints.

Brady will head to New England this coming Sunday with probably a really big chip on his shoulder (he seems to always have one of those but this one will be BIGGER than all of those that came before it!) and a chance to make history, as he needs just 68 yards to break Drew Brees’ passing-yards record.

So what will the fans at Gillette Stadium do on Sunday? How will they react? I’m a Boston guy and feel like I have a good feel for this. They’re going to cheer him when he comes out for pregame warmups, they’re going to show him love leading off to kickoff, and then they will root for the Patriots to win.

But man, it’s going to be really AWKWARD when the game begins and Brady is back out on that field, where he won so many big games, leading a different team and likely throwing a bunch of TD passes.

Imagine having an ex over at your house, one you had a great relationship with but things eventually just didn’t work out between the two of you so you “parted ways.” Well, this Brady reunion for Patriots fans will be like having that ex and their new love of their life over for dinner at your house and things are going so well for them and they can’t wait to show you that and there you are, in your own home, still trying to figure out your new life.

Not fun!

But this game is going to be fun and this week of hype is going to be fun. Well, I’m guessing people outside of Boston and Tampa will get annoyed with it all but whatever, I’m looking forward to it.

We’re on to the Bucs-Patriots.

Quick hits: NFL Week 3 Awards… Rory McIlroy’s emotional interview… Ryder Cup celebration photos… And more.

– I’m back with my Week 3 NFL awards, where I take a gif-by-gif look back at the good, the bad, and the hilarious from Sunday. And yes, I start by wondering why the Jaguars’ mascot continues to risk it all for such a bad team.

– Golf fans rightfully loved Rory McIlroy’s tearful and incredibly honest interview after his Ryder Cup match on Sunday.

– Speaking of the Ryder Cup, you need to see these 12 awesome photos of Team USA celebrating its win over Europe. So good.

– Also, Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau hugged it out a few times after the Ryder Cup win.

– Gus Johnson had another great Gus Johnson moment on Sunday and this one came on a 109-yard TD by the Jaguars.

– You need to hear the Lions’ radio broadcast of Justin Tucker’s 66-yard, game-winning field goal for the Ravens. Total heartbreak.
