It does certainly create an interesting ‘what if’, however. What if Nebraska stayed an annual rival of Notre Dame’s well after 1925? Does Notre Dame ultimately find a west coast rival, are they more likely to agree to an annual deal with the Rose Bowl back then? On the other side, how much different is Nebraska’s deep history if Notre Dame remained on the schedule?
Since the annual series ended after the 1925 contest the Cornhuskers and Fighting Irish have met just five times with Nebraska holding a 3-2 edge. Most recently the teams met for a home-and-home in 2000 and 2001 with top-ranked Nebraska escaping with an overtime win in South Bend in 2000 before routing the Irish in Lincoln to open the 2001 campaign.
There are not currently any future games scheduled between Notre Dame and Nebraska but if Scott Frost can get things going (he’s running out of time) then perhaps a postseason game could be on the table like it was in the 1973 Orange Bowl, another Nebraska victory.
