Week 5 Mountain West Football Power Rankings

Week 5 Mountain West Football Power Rankings Air Force now at the top? Not yet. Contact/Follow @JeremyMauss & @MWCwire Gap is closing Here we go. The Air Force Falcons are gaining steam with another dominant performance last week. The Falcons and …

Air Force is peeling away a few Fresno State first-place votes. The Bulldogs have one more than the Falcons and they each have a third-place vote as there is a Wyoming and Boise State believer who each snagged a second-place vote this past week.

At the other end, it will be hard to challenge Nevada as the bottom-feeder of the league. Very few bright spots in this team. Defensive line makes some noise and a little bit is going in the receiving game with Jamaal Bell.

The rest of the bottom is a jumbled mess with New Mexico, Hawaii, San Jose State, and San Diego State all earning at least one vote for 11th place.

12. Nevada (PV: 12)

Ken Wilson has a lot to work on. There shouldn’t be any real Year Zero’s any more, but this is his second year and there hasn’t been much improvement.

10. Hawaii (PV: 10)

Get the running game going and this team could surprise a few. Repeat as last week.

10. San Jose State (PV: 9)

The Spartans need to find their mojo. Maybe it’s me clinging to preseason expectations but there is maybe some hope for this team to turn it around.

9. New Mexico (PV: 9)

The Lobos are showing signs of life on offense and looks like things are slowly turning around for this team.

8. San Diego State (PV: 6)

Oh man… this team is a mess. There is no running game, quarterback play is just meh… and the defense is not elite.

7. Utah State (PV: 8)

This is no mans land for the rankings and Utah State is here despite them likely starting Cooper Legas this week against Colorado State under center.

6. Colorado State (PV: 7)

The Rams have something with QB Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi who is lighting up the stat sheet throwing a lot of passes to Tory Horton and transfer tight end Dallin Holker.

5. Boise State (PV: 4)

The Broncos are not what they were. They have an elite ground attack with Ashton Jeanty and it could be even better if George Holani is healthy. The big question is quarterback play and this week Andy Avalos plans to split time with Taylen Green and Maddux Masen against San Jose State.

4. UNLV (PV: 5)

Are we really going to get to the point where UNLV is an eight-win team? Maybe? They are doing this with backup QB Jayden Maiava while Doug Brumfield is out, and the team is winning. A bowl game is looking like the baseline for Barry Odom’s first year.

3. Wyoming (PV: 3)

All comes down to if they can get solid running game and a mistake-free quarterback game if they want to move up in the polls.

2. Air Force (PV: 2, 4 first-place vote)

A much needed bye week after they pummeled San Diego State.

1. Fresno State (PV: 1, 6 first-place votes)

Going to Laramie to face a stifling Wyoming defense will be a good test. The Fresno State offensive line had issues against Nevada, and this Cowboys team is much better than that.
