Week 2 Mountain West Football Power Rankings

Week 2 Mountain West Football Power Rankings These rankings are tough! Contact/Follow @MWCwire We do have a clear No. 1 The Mountain West is all over the place with who we think is good, or not good. There were a lot of losses this week like Fresno …

This is going to be a long season. The defense can’t stop anyone and the offense can’t move the ball well. Give it time Warriors fans.

11. Colorado State (LW: 10, 36 points)

Things are rough under Jay Norvell’s first year with the Rams. A piece of big news this week was that wide receiver Dante Wright announced he is transferring after seeing extremely limited playing time this year.

10. New Mexico (LW: 11, 40 points)

The defense played quite well against Boise State. The final was 31-17 and one of the scores was a blocked punt that led to a touchdown. The offense needs to find its groove and if it does then the Lobos should be able to take that next step under Danny Gonzales.

9. Nevada (LW: 8, 55 points)

Losing to Incarnate Word is one thing but giving up 55 is another. The offense did well, which is a little surprising, and is sticking with Nate Cox as its quarterback. However, a Ken Wilson led defense needs to fix a few things as they face Iowa this week.

8. UNLV (LW: 8, 61 points)

More points but less movement for the Rebels this week. They had a solid showing vs. Cal and nearly had the upset losing by just six points. There is depth at wide receiver and possibly the emergence of its new go-to running back in Aidan Robbins who 84 yards and a score on the ground, plus caught three passes.

7. Utah State (LW: 4, 72 points)

The Aggies had a real tough loss last week against a top 20 FCS team in Weber State. It was not just a loss but a massive blow, 35-7, which saw Utah State not be competitive. We will see if the defending champs bounce back for their next game after getting a bye for Week 3.

6. Wyoming (LW: 6, 74 points)

This is where things get weird with some of the results. The Cowboys did a fine job winning over Northern Colorado and it was good to see that Andrew Peasley did complete over 55% of his passes.

5. San Jose State (LW: 6, 89 points)

The Spartans were so close to getting an upset over another SEC team on the road, but they fell just short to Auburn. The running game still needs some work but Chevan Corderio and the passing game looked much better this week.

Also, the rush defense did a good job holding Auburn mostly in check.

4. San Diego State (LW: 6, 103 points)

The Aztecs took care of business over an FCS team and seemingly got a few things right. A positive note was to see that the injury that knocked out Braxton Burmeister was not serious as he did not seem to be limited.

3. Boise State (LW: 5, 103 points)

A win over New Mexico helped this Broncos team shoot up the rankings — coupled with some losses. The team looked better and had a special teams touchdown and allowed only seven offensive points to the Lobos.

2. Fresno State (LW: 1, 1 first-place vote, 116 points)

A close lose to Oregon State did not knock the Bulldogs too far down. Instead of being tied for first, they are a clear-cut No. 2 in this league. They just need to shore up the defense a bit and protect QB Jake Haener better.

1. Air Force (LW: 1, 10 first-place votes, 131 points)

This is the dominant team in the conference and they are doing it on both sides of the ball. On defense, they have allowed just 27 points on the season and own a dominant 41-10 win over Colorado.
