We won’t know how good Arkansas will be next year for months

Devo Davis has seven weeks to remove his name from the draft. More players will leave and enter Arkansas, too, between now and then.

Trevon Brazile will play at least one more year for Arkansas. Barry Dunning, Derian Ford, Joseph Pinion and Jalen Graham will, too.

Tramon Mark will join the Hogs from Houston. Keyon Menifield will join from Washington. Both will likely step into starting role or, at worst, regular roles in the rotation.

But how good Arkansas will be in 2023-24, whether coach Eric Musselman can take the team to a fourth straight Sweet 16, shouldn’t even be guessed upon the summer.

That’s because the Hogs still need to hear from several players and likely can’t make many more roster moves until those players’ intentions are known.

Nick Smith Jr. and Ricky Council elected to turn professional and neither is expected to remove his name from NBA consideration. Fellow guard Devo Davis, too, announced he would enter the draft, but projections suggest he will return to college. Still, nothing is concrete with any of the three.

Plus, Arkansas still awaits word from starting center Makhi Mitchell, wing Jordan Walsh and point guard Anthony Black. If you were betting, the over/under on the number of those three who will return would likely be set at 1 1/2.

If at least one leaves, then Musselman will almost certainly bring in a transfer to replace him. If two, then two transfers. And so on. But Davis doesn’t have to make a decision about his future completley until the end of May, which means trying to project in any rotations or a standing for the Hogs in 2023-24 is an exercise in folly.

For now, patience is paramount. Hogs fans will know soon enough.
