Former New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton made an appearance on The Heard with Colin Cowherd on Monday to discuss the possibility of a team hiring him after completing a trade with the Saints.
A few quick notes from the interview:
Cowherd incorrectly stated that Denver did not have a first-round pick after trading it away for quarterback Russell Wilson. The Broncos did trade their original first-round pick for Wilson, but Payton correctly pointed out that Denver has a late first-round pick from the San Francisco 49ers (through the Miami Dolphins) from the Bradley Chubb trade.
The fact that Payton knows the Broncos have a first-round pick might or might not be notable. He later went on to say that he believes the Saints will receive a mid- or late-round pick in the first round in a potential trade.
Payton also pointed out, however, that the trade compensation will go down significantly in 2024 if he chooses to stay at Fox for another year. That’s because teams would know Payton would then be just one year away from being out of contract, giving them leverage against New Orleans.
Payton also reiterated that a team’s ownership group is more important to him than their quarterback situation, something he previously said on Fox’s NFL pregame show last week.
Payton had a virtual interview with the Houston Texans on Monday and an in-person interview with the Broncos in Los Angeles on Tuesday. He is also scheduled to meet with the Carolina Panthers later this week.
