Rutgers field hockey captured the first tournament title in program history on Sunday, beating Michigan 1-0.

The Scarlet Knights were the Big Ten Tournament’s second-seed and gained a berth in the final by beating the third-seed Penn State 2-1 on Friday. Michigan, ranked fourth, upset No. 1 Iowa 3-2 on Friday.

With the three wins in the Big Ten Tournament, Rutgers is now 18-3. They avenged an Oct. 22 loss at Michigan, the 3-0 defeat to the Wolverines the worst of the season for Rutgers.

The Big Ten Tournament was hosted by Rutgers this year.

A Tayla Parkes goal in the second quarter was the difference for Rutgers. Her score held up in the second half, leading to an exuberant celebration from the Scarlet Knights at the final whistle:

The win likely guaranteed that Rutgers will be a first or second seed in the upcoming NCAA Tournament.

Coming into the tournament, Iowa was the top-ranked team in the nation followed by Michigan and then Rutgers in the latest NFHCA Poll. The Big Ten also featured three other top 10 programs in No. 5 Northwestern, No. 6 Maryland and No. 7 Penn State.
