Watch: Rory McIlroy hit a horrible tee shot at the Masters, and he’s fading again

Rory finished the round at 3 over, meaning his first green jacket is likely out of reach again this year.

Even Bryson DeChambeau’s hook shot from the first round of the 2020 Masters looked pretty good compared to what Rory McIlroy did on Friday.

On No. 13 — he was still finishing his first round at Augusta — he hit a drive that went very, very left into the woods. And let’s not kid ourselves here: we’ve all done that. Golf is hard, even for pros who have won majors.

McIlroy ended up with a bogey on the par 5, which seems like a pretty good save considering what happened off the tee. He finished the round at 3 over, meaning his first green jacket is likely out of reach again this year.

Rory said in the spring that he thought the event being pushed back to November might help him.

“I feel like there’s anticipation going to Augusta the first big event of the year. There’s all this hype,” McIlory said. “I don’t think it’ll feel like that this year, I think it’ll feel a little bit different, which I’m looking forward to. It’s going to be a different Masters and personally, selfishly, maybe that’s what I need to get the jacket.”
