Rickie Fowler made a much-needed charge up the leaderboard on Friday at the PGA Championship after a poor opening round left him in danger of missing the cut – but a unbelievable blunder late in his second round led to a double-bogey that put him one stroke outside the projected cut line.
Fowler played brilliant bogey-free golf through his opening 14 holes of the day, moving from 3-over par for the tournament to 1-under and inside the projected cut line. Then the par-4 6th hole happened.
Fowler missed the fairway well to the right with his drive, and hit an approach over the green. Needing to get up and down for par, Fowler’s third shot left him just under nine feet from the hole, but he missed his par putt.
Fowler had a simple tap-in for bogey – but when he attempted a leaning swipe into the cup, Fowler strangely halted his stroke just as his putter was about to hit the ball. Watching the footage closely shows that Fowler just barely grazed the ball, causing it to move slightly. He then reset himself, tapped the green with his putter, and finished out the hole.

The result was an ugly six, which dropped him to 1-over for the tournament. At the time, the projected cut line was even par – though that could drop back down later in the day if the wind picks up.
