Phil Mickelson has long been one of the most exhilarating players to watch on the PGA Tour, as the 50-year-old is a genius around the greens, and is generally willing to try shots other pros wouldn’t dream of. On Sunday at the Memorial, that famous Mickelson creativity got him into a bit of trouble.
Mickelson hit a solid 364-yard drive into the fairway at the par-4 13th, and had 77 yards left to the hole, per shot tracker. Instead of grabbing a wedge and trying to spin an approach shot within a few feet, Mickelson grabbed his putter and attempted a wild 231-foot putt.
Mickelson didn’t hit his ball hard enough, unfortunately, and his putt veered to the left and came to rest 11 yards short in the fairway. His reaction was classic.
