Watch: Patrick Mahomes with yet another incredible run

Patrick Mahomes took advantage of his own athleticism and the NFL’s rules protecting quarterbacks to make an incredible third-down play.

Two things we know about professional football: Patrick Mahomes is an incredible athlete no matter what he’s doing on the field, and if you hit a quarterback anywhere the sideline these days, you’re going to be on the hook for a 15-yard penalty and an earholing from your head coach.

With 2:50 left in the third quarter of the Chiefs’ Monday night game against the Bills, Mahomes took advantage of both things.

The Chiefs had third-and-5 from the Buffalo 17-yard line, and Mahomes ran to the left sideline, and looked to give himself up at one point. If he does that, defenders can’t come after him.

And then… the old switcheroo.

Mahomes was called short of the first down on what was classified as a four-yard run. Head coach Andy Reid was incensed and asked for a measurement, but in the end, everything worked out. On fourth-and-1, Mahomes handed the ball to running back Darrel Williams, who bounded in for the 13-yard touchdown. That put the Chiefs up, 20-10.

In this game, Mahomes also became the fastest quarterback in NFL history to throw for 90 career touchdowns, doing so in 37 games and passing Dan Marino, who did it in 40.
