WATCH: Newest Raven Calais Campbell makes NFL Network Top 100 list

The Baltimore Ravens got a steal of a deal when they traded for DE Calais Campbell, seeing him put on the NFL’s Top 100 Players list

The Baltimore Ravens are set to have seven players make the NFL Network’s Top 100 Players of 2020 list, tying for the most from one team this year. After seeing CB Marlon Humphrey kickstart the list, Ravens newcomer Calais Campbell was next up at No. 79.

Campbell beat out other top pass rushers like Cleveland Browns defensive end Myles Garrett (No. 80), Kansas City Chiefs defensive end Frank Clark (No. 95), and Tampa Bay Buccaneers outside linebacker Lavonte David (No. 100). But it’s how little Baltimore paid to acquire Campbell that’s the real story here.

The Ravens traded a fifth-round pick (one they got in their trade of tight end Hayden Hurst to the Atlanta Falcons this offseason) to the Jacksonville Jaguars for Campbell’s services. In addition, Baltimore worked out a contract extension with Campbell as a part of the trade, lowering his cap hit for the 2020 season to a more manageable $10 million, according to Over The Cap. That means the Ravens got one of the league’s best pass rushers for a late-round pick and an undervalued cap hit. It’s those types of deals that have Baltimore in good hands with new general manager Eric DeCosta following Ozzie Newsome stepping down from the role in 2019.

Campbell’s relatively high placement comes after a down year on the stat sheet, seeing him drop from No. 54 on the list last year, losing 25 spots this year to No. 79. After back-to-back seasons with double-digit sacks with the Jaguars, Campbell posted only 6.5 sacks in 2019. However, he did get more pressures (33 in 2019 versus 28 in 2018) and quarterback hits (25 in 2019 versus 22 in 2018).
