Watch: Mike Williams shares wild story on how he committed to Clemson over South Carolina

Mike Williams planned to be a Gamecock, but he became a Tiger. It’s safe to say things worked out well.

Mike Williams is one of the best wide receivers in Clemson football history, but did you know he didn’t plan on being a Tiger?

Well, heading into his July 31, 2012, commitment day, the plan for Williams was to commit to South Carolina and become a Gamecock. Williams discussed this time of his life on the Bussin’ With The Boys podcast, breaking down how he planned to join South Carolina but chose Clemson at the last minute.

“On the day when I went to commit, I just picked the Clemson hat. I swear,” Williams said. “I told my family I’m going to South Carolina. It was like 30 minutes from the crib. I’m like, ‘Yeah, we going there,’ and then on commitment day, I grabbed the South Carolina hat, put it down, and grabbed the Clemson one.”

A wild turn, this is likely one of the best decisions of Williams’ life, as we all know what he was able to do at Clemson. Clemson fans, if you are looking for someone to thank, it is probably Williams’ high school head coach, who was adamant that Clemson was the best place for the young wide receiver.

Just picking the hat helped Clemson become the program it is today. Williams is one of the most essential pieces of Clemson’s 2016 National Championship and one of the greatest Tigers’ of all time.
