The long-awaited return of star wide receiver Michael Thomas was slow to start but quickly picked up as he was a key contributor in the team’s 16-point comeback against the Atlanta Falcons in the regular season debut.
Thomas had two clutch touchdown receptions in the fourth quarter with A.J. Terrell, Atlanta’s top cornerback, running with him in coverage. The first was in a goal-to-go situation where Thomas went over Terrell’s head to come down with the ball, it led to a successful two-point conversion to bring the Saints deficit to eight. The second touchdown brought it to a two-point game, and was in the same spot against the same opponent: Terrell.
Thomas finished his return with five catches for 57 yards, twice hitting pay dirt. Only Jarvis Landry (7 receptions for 114 yards) outpaced him on the afternoon.
