With Brad Stevens taking over as the Celtics new President of Basketball Operations following the retirement of Danny Ainge, Boston is in search of a new head coach.
The Celtics’ search comes with Stevens leaving the bench for the front office after nine seasons. The storied franchise now led by All-Star’s Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown should certainly attract coaches across the league to be Stevens’ replacement.
We’ve heard the rumors of potential candidates in Lakers assistant Jason Kidd, Clippers assistant Chauncey Billups, and Nets assistants Ime Udoka and Mike D’Antoni as well as interviewing current Celtics assistant Jerome Allen.
But that certainly doesn’t mean there couldn’t be a dark horse candidate come out of the shadows and take the job. For example, on the latest episode of On ‘Celtics All Access’ on CLNS, Jeff Goodman of Stadium suggested that Michigan Wolverine head coach Juwan Howard would be a good fit for the Celtics head coaching position.

Michigan alum and Fab Five member, Howard became the coach at University of Michigan in 2019, holding a record of 42-17 over the two-year span. In 2020-21, Howard won the AP Coach of the Year award along with being named Big Ten Coach of the Year as Michigan won the Big Ten regular season title and was a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament, where they reached the Elite 8 before losing to UCLA.
Howard won two NBA championships and was a one-time All-Star during his 19-year NBA career.
