New MSU head coach Jonathan Smith tell the media why he didn’t lead the team out of the tunnel last week

You may have noticed new head coach Jonathan Smith wasn’t at the front of the line when the Spartans came out onto the field against Florida Atlantic. That was by design.

Smith met with the media on Monday and told the reasoning for why he didn’t lead the Spartans out of the tunnel on Friday. His reasoning was that he wants his team to be “player-led.”

“We’re gonna be player-led, let these guys go. Me running first? I’m the slowest one running out there, and so I don’t think that helps,” Smith told the media on Monday (quote courtesy of WXYZ Detroit’s Brad Galli).

Smith has talked this offseason about having a “low ego” and this statement only furthers that from the top down.

Michigan State picked up the win over Florida Atlantic, 16-10, on Friday. It was the first of the Smith era at Michigan State.
