The Iowa Hawkeyes went into Saturday night’s contest at Michigan State without one of their key defensive stars.
Graduate CASH Sebastian Castro was listed as questionable on the Week 8 availability report versus the Spartans and ultimately didn’t suit up for the Hawkeyes.
With Castro out of the picture, that created an opportunity for redshirt sophomore defensive back Koen Entringer. Entringer made his first career start on Saturday night against the Spartans.
The 6-foot, 207 pound defensive back didn’t wait long to make his impact felt either.
Entringer came away with the game’s first takeaway of the night, intercepting Michigan State sophomore quarterback Aidan Chiles late in the first quarter.

Entringer has been coming on of late. The Ypsilanti, Mich., native tallied a career-high seven tackles in Iowa’s 40-16 win over Washington last week.
“Well, if a kid earns the right to play, he should play. You’ve got to put him in. It’s the routine of me trying to make sure that everybody’s getting a fair shake at it. But, I think he has multiple positions. Obviously, the time that he got back was the beginning of camp that he was starting to come out. So, it took him a little bit longer to get where he’s at now, but I think he can play some multiple positions.
“I think he can go down and play the CASH. I think he can play the strong safety… So, when you start mixing around if a guy goes down, okay Quinn Schulte goes down, well, hey, X, you’ve got to go over here. Hey, Koen, you’ve got to go here. You better be ready to have the pieces of the puzzles to put together so we can keep functioning and the engine doesn’t break down,” Iowa defensive coordinator Phil Parker said of Entringer during the Hawkeyes’ bye week earlier this season.
