The Boston Celtics have one of the best defenses in the NBA this season and by far the best in the month of January. A fair amount of that dominance on that end of the court has been the growing familiarity of the team with new head coach Ime Udoka’s switch-heavy approach to defending the basket.
But Celtics nerds, Timelord stans, and basketball tactical aficionados know there is more going on than a team getting their defensive rotations down properly that’s driving the team’s success there — specifically, how the Celtics are using starting big man Robert Williams III as a roaming “free safety” to terrorize opposing offenses.
To get an idea of what it is that coach Udoka has been having his team do with Williams, check out this clip from the “Thinking Basketball” podcast, where host Ben Taylor breaks down exactly what Timelord is doing to warp offensive sets the Celtics have faced this season.
