The Chicago Bears addressed their offensive tackle concerns with a steal in the second round of Friday’s NFL draft when they traded up to land Oklahoma State offensive tackle Teven Jenkins with the 39th overall pick.
It was the second straight day that GM Ryan Pace made the decision to trade up to grab their guy — a top talent still on the board in Round 2. Chicago traded their third-round pick and a sixth-round pick to move up 13 spots, while also receiving a fifth rounder in exchange.
But, just like when the Bears traded up to start quarterback Justin Fields in the first round, it was a necessary move to get a quality player that you believe to be the future of your franchise.
Jenkins is everything you could want in an offensive tackle, particularly how he brings nastiness to the position, something Chicago’s offensive line has been missing since Kyle Long and Olin Kreutz before him. Jenkins received a first-round grade from the Bears, which explains exactly why they traded up to grab a Week 1 starter at right tackle.
