After missing three games with a foot injury, Gary Payton II wasted no time making an impact in his return to the court against the San Antonio Spurs. The Golden State Warriors guard helped welcome the No. 1 pick from the 2023 draft, Victor Wembanyama, with an emphatic block at the rim.
With Wembanyama running the floor on a fast break, the 6-foot-3 Payton rose to swipe away the 7-foot-6 rookie’s layup attempt. Payton sent Wembanyama’s shot into the second row of the crowd sitting on the baseline.
Following Payton’s block, the Chase Center crowd exploded with a frenzy of cheers.

Although Wembanyama was blocked early, the No. 1 pick impressed during his debut in San Francisco. The French big-man tallied 22 points on 8-of-18 shooting from the field to go along with eight rebounds, three assists and two blocks in 35 minutes.
