The next crazy throw in Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes’ bag of tricks has been revealed.
We’ve seen him break out the no-look pass, the left-handed toss, the sidearm throws and everything in-between. What we haven’t yet seen is the highly-touted behind-the-back pass. We knew that it was in his arsenal when he toyed around with the throw during the 2019 training camp, but it looked unrefined. It certainly didn’t look like something that he could do successfully on gameday.
Also, how about the ol' play-action roll out for a behind-the-back toss? Gotta test out the new stuff now. #Chiefs pic.twitter.com/wwAnddBKqq

He practiced it as the season went on and ahead of the Super Bowl, NFL Network’s James Palmer polled some of his teammates about the throw.
“[Mahomes] tries it all the time because he keeps lobbying for coach Reid to put it in the system,” Chiefs QB Chad Henne said. “He tells coach Reid, ‘I can option this way and then throw it back this way’, and I’m like, ‘Ahhh, let’s just take care of the ball.'”
“He can get it downfield a good 20 yards and he’s pretty accurate, too, honestly,” Chiefs WR Demarcus Robinson said.

While this play might not yet be installed in the Chiefs’ offense, the guiding philosophy that Reid and Mahomes have lived by since Mahomes entered the league is, “Nothing’s impossible until we make it impossible.”
Could we perhaps see Mahomes break out the behind-the-back throw this season?
Don’t count it out.
