After dropping their Big Ten opener to No. 1 UCLA, coach Tina Langley and the Washington Huskies have earned two straight road wins in conference play. On New Year’s Eve, the Huskies finished off an 84-75 win over the Illinois Fighting Illini in Champaign to move to 11-4 on the season and 2-1 in Big Ten play.
“These players are really gifted, and as I think as we’ve settled in and just learned what we run, who we are, and what we do well, I think we’ve focused on what we do well,” Langley told the UW Daily after the game. “Transition is a big part of what we do well. We move the ball well; we have a lot of players that can score the basketball.”
On Tuesday, sophomore guard Sayvia Sellers led the way in that department with a team-high 26 points. She also chipped a game-high 8 assists, 4 rebounds, and a steal while playing every minute of the contest.
As junior Elle Ladine struggled after being named the USBWA’s National Player of the Week, notching just 6 points, Dalayah Daniels picked up the slack. The graduate student tallied her second straight double-double, finishing with 16 points and 12 rebounds on an efficient 8-12 from the field.
The Huskies will take the court next on January 7 at Alaska Airlines Arena to take on the Wisconsin Badgers.
