Washington unlikely to reach long-term agreement with Brandon Scherff before deadline

Washington’s right guard Brandon Scherff is unlikely to sign a contract extension before the July deadline.

According to a report from ESPN’s John Keim, there is not much optimism that Washington will be able to reach a long term deal with right guard Brandon Scherff before the July deadline to sign players on the franchise tag.

Scherff was tagged by the team earlier this season, keeping him around for at least the next year, and potentially longer if he chooses to sign an extended deal.

“Barring any changes over the next week, Scherff would play on the tag for $15.03 million. The Redskins have expressed a desire to keep him long term as part of their core while strengthening the rest of their offensive line. Scherff has made three Pro Bowls,” Keim wrote.

In layman’s terms, this isn’t the worst news in the world, it just means that an extension for Scherff could come later, rather than sooner. The veteran right guard is still in the teams plans for the future.
