Washington signs QB Taylor Heinicke to backup Dwayne Haskins

Ron Rivera wouldn’t name a backup QB on Friday, but Washington elevated Taylor Heinicke from the PS on Saturday to fill the roll.

While the news came out on Friday afternoon that it would be Dwayne Haskins to get the start at the QB position for Washington on Sunday when they match up against the Seattle Seahawks, head coach Ron Rivera declined to name a backup.

That has been remedied by Saturday, with Washington announcing that they are signing QB Taylor Heinicke from the practice squad to act as the QB2 on Sunday. Washington will also be elevating undrafted rookie QB Steven Montez as well, so there will be three options should they need it.

Heinicke is the more experienced of the two, having played under Rivera in Carolina. Earlier this week, the coach lauded how quickly Heinicke has jumped back into the routine.

“Taylor’s a sharp dude,” Rivera said, via The Richmond Times-Dispatch. “He picked it up right away. I have no issues with having to play him come Sunday if there was an emergency or situation that we had to put him in.”

We can hope that we won’t have to see either Heinicke or Montez on the field this season, but if the need arises, at least Washington feels comfortable that they have someone who can step up.
