Washington QB Michael Penix Jr. will throw at the NFL Scouting Combine

Many of the top QBs choose not to throw in Indianapolis, but Penix will do the on-field drills next week

It’s become somewhat normal for many of the top quarterback prospects to eschew participating in throwing drills during the annual NFL Scouting Combine. Every year, several of the top QBs choose not to throw, instead saving it for their pro day, where things can be scripted to their strengths and they get to work with familiar receivers.

At least one of the top QBs in 2024 will be throwing during the combine in Indianapolis next week. Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr. will throw during the combine, per ESPN’s Jordan Reid.

Penix will also give receivers a rare chance to catch passes from a left-handed quarterback. As Daniel Jeremiah of the NFL Network noted in his pre-combine conference call, that can take some adjustment for receivers. It’s good background for what might be seen during the on-field workouts in Indianapolis.

“One of the things we’ve always said is that with left-handed
quarterbacks, you have to be patient when you bring them in,” Jeremiah stated. “You have to be patient with your receivers just because of the adjustment it’s going to take just with the spin. You will have some drops. It’s a little bit unusual for the wideouts to get used to it.”
