The Washington Football Team continued its makeover on Tuesday by announcing the hiring of Dr. Barbara Roberts to be the franchise’s first director of wellness and clinical services.

Roberts, a respected psychologist, has held the position of clinical associate professor in the department of psychiatry at Georgetown University Medical Center. She has also served in the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy.

Dr. Roberts received her B.A. and M.A. degrees from Fisk University in Nashville. She earned her Ph.D. from Oklahoma University.

She had the following to say, per Washington’s official website:

I look forward to this opportunity to enhance the NFL Total Wellness mission. I will focus on the development of a foundation for mental wellness and its impact on overall health and performance. I am deeply appreciative to Dan and Tanya Snyder and Coach Rivera for this tremendous opportunity to further develop a culture of wellness.

Head coach Ron Rivera also spoke in the release:

“Mental health is one of the most important factors in making sure our players are prepared for the challenges of life in the NFL,” said Rivera. “Dr. Roberts brings a wealth of knowledge and experience and will be a tremendous resource for our players. Her impressive track record speaks for itself, and I am excited for her to join our team.”

The world is now taking a more proactive role in mental health, and the NFL is beginning to do the same. This is such a smart hire by Washington. It shows a commitment to every individual in the organization’s mental health — not just the players.
