Washington at Eagles: Game notes

  • It’s simple. Washington wins the NFC East Division with a win. It goes home for the offseason if it loses – the Dallas Cowboys at New York Giants 1 p.m. ET winner would then claim the title. Already eliminated, the Eagles can only play “spoiler.”
  • The biggest question is the availability of Washington QB Alex Smith, who didn’t play the last two and a half games due to a right calf injury. NFL Network reported Saturday that Smith, who is listed as questionable on the official injury report, will start but will be re-evaluated Sunday morning. The veteran QB is the frontrunner for AP Comeback Player of the Year after steering 4 consecutive wins from Weeks 11-14. QB Taylor Heinicke is the backup.
  • Two more nagging injuries to worry about are those of Washington’s top receiver, Terry McLaurin (ankle), and leading rusher, rookie RB Antonio Gibson (toe). They’re also both listed as questionable but are expected to play.
  • Washington upset the Eagles 27-17 in Week 1 as a 5.5-point home underdog behind a 13-0 fourth-quarter rally. QBs Dwayne Haskins (WFT) and Carson Wentz (Philly) were the starters. Haskins has since been released, and Wentz was replaced by rookie QB Jalen Hurts.
  • Hurts started the last 3 games and has completed 54.9% of his passes for 847 yards with 5 touchdowns and 2 interceptions while running for 238 yards with a TD on 38 carries. Philly is 1-2 in his starts.
  • Washington’s Week 1 victory vs. Philly snapped a 6-game skid in the head-to-head series.

Betting stats:

  • ATS: Washington 9-6 | Eagles 5-10
  • O/U: Washington 5-10 | Eagles 7-8

Washington at Eagles: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Washington 21, Eagles 20

Money line (?)

PASS. Washington’s -225 is too pricey and not worth the risk.

Against the spread (?)

PHILADELPHIA +4 (-110) is the STRONGEST PLAY – 1½ times your usual wager – as long as the line doesn’t drop below 3, which it shouldn’t. Washington should get the win it needs as long as Smith can play, but Hurts will keep the depleted Eagles within striking distance.

Over/Under (?)

PASS. I’m sorry. I hate giving out only one play in these columns, but the 43.5 total is a tough call. It’s low, but with the number of Washington’s questionable injuries, it’s too dicey to wager on.

If it’s announced Smith won’t play, try to catch the Under before it drops and back the Eagles’ money line (+180).
