Washington Commanders sign Penn State receiver Mitchell Tinsley as undrafted free agent

Following the NFL draft, one of Penn State’s top offensive players from last season signed an undrafted free-agent contract.

A year ago saw the Washington Commanders use a first-round draft pick to add wide receiver Jahan Dotson to the offense. Now, the Commanders are adding another wide receiver option as an undrafted free agent. Following the conclusion of the 2023 NFL draft, the Commanders signed Penn State wide receiver [autotag]Mitchell Tinsley[/autotag] to its roster as an undrafted free agent.

Tinsley arrived at Penn State after Dotson had already moved on to be a draft pick, but it will be fun to see two Penn State wide receivers potentially on the Washington roster if Tinsley hangs around. Tinsley essentially filled the roster hole vacated by Dotson last year. Tinsley transferred to Penn State following his time at Western Kentucky, where he accumulated 1,402 receiving yards in 2021.

Tinsley’s production wasn’t as high at Penn State with 577 yards and five touchdowns last season, but he was a strong asset for the Nittany Lions, who also had Parker Washington and tight end Brenton Strange to carry the load in the passing game. Both Washington and Strange ended up being drafted in the 2023 NFL draft by the Jacksonville Jaguars. Tinsley was viewed as a potential late-round draft pick, although he made it to the end of the draft without getting a call.

But he now has that opportunity to secure a roster spot, or at least make a solid enough impression to continue on and put in some work for an NFL training camp.
