The Washington Football Team is scheduled to announce the franchise’s new name Wednesday morning on NBC’s Today Show. However, NBC Sports Washington may have already discovered Washington’s new name.
Brad Freitas, an aerial reporter and photojournalist for NBC Universal, took a video while in the back of Chopper 4 that reveals a “Commanders” banner at FedEx Field.

While Washington likely didn’t intend on anyone discovering the new name via helicopter, it felt like the team was fine with the name getting out for weeks. On Monday, franchise legend Joe Theismann went on CBS Radio and discussed Commanders being Washington’s new name.
Theismann later clarified he wasn’t sure what the name was, but he was clearly doing some backtracking. Since the team announced the reveal date last month, numerous clues pointing to Commanders as the new name has dropped.
It becomes official Wednesday.
