Washington baseball secures Apple Cup with 11-5 victory

The Washington Huskies exploded on offense for a second straight day to win the Apple Cup.

The Washington Huskies claimed the Apple Cup on the diamond on Saturday afternoon with an 11-5 victory over the Washington State Cougars. After scoring 5 runs in their previous 5 games, the Huskies have found their stride on offense, putting up 25 in the last two.

Second baseman Aiva Arquette has been a big part of the offensive resurgence for coach Jason Kelly’s team, hitting a three-run home run in the fourth inning, his third homer in the last two days.

Third baseman Sam DeCarlo was also an integral piece in Washington’s win, with a two-run double in the second inning to open the scoring and an RBI double in the fourth, going 2 for 4 on the day with 4 runs batted in.

On the mound, Spencer Dessart earned the win for the Huskies, moving to 2-2 on the year after allowing 4 hits and 3 earned runs over 5 innings. Spencer Jones took his third loss of the year for the Cougars, going just 3 innings and letting up 3 hits and 3 earned runs.

The victory moved the Huskies one game closer to .500, making them 8-12-1 on the year and 3-6 against Pac-12 opponents, while the Cougars dropped to 16-11 on the season and 6-6 in Pac-12 play. The Huskies will take to the diamond again on Wednesday night at 6:05 for a matchup against Seattle University.
