Was 1988 Notre Dame’s Closest Thing to a “Miracle” Type Championship?

It did get me thinking though, was Notre Dame’s 1988 squad the equivalent of the the 1980 Miracle on Ice squad?

Before you scream and yell that nothing could ever be know that I already agree with you on that.  However, let’s just make a few comparisons real fast on the anniversary of this great event.

After playing Sweden to a draw the United States went un-tested in the first round of the 1980 Olympics.  They beat up Norway 5-1, Czechoslovakia 7-3, Romania 7-2 and West Germany 4-2 on their path to earning a spot in the medal round.

Notre Dame followed up their season-opening win over Michigan with a cakewalks at Michigan State (20-3), home against Purdue (52-7) and Stanford (42-14) and at Pitt (30-20) before setting up the game that is most-remembered in 1988.
