After nine months away from the court during an extended offseason, Steph Curry’s return to game action in the NBA season opener didn’t live up to the hype.
The two-time Most Valuable Player finished the game with a team-high 20 points on 7-of-21 shooting from the field in Golden State’s 125-99 loss to the Brooklyn Nets. Curry added 10 assists, four boards and two steals in 30 minutes.
Adding to Golden State’s struggles against Brooklyn, Curry couldn’t get into a rhythm from beyond the arc, shooting 2-of-10 on long-distance shots.
Dealing with a 28 point deficit heading into the fourth quarter, Curry’s opening night came to an end when Steve Kerr opted to keep him on the bench for the final period.
Without Klay Thompson, it’s clear Curry will be the Warriors’ lead option on the offensive side of the floor. With increased responsibility on offense, there’s no doubt defenses will be paying extra attention to the Golden State point guard in 2020-21.
Throughout the game, the Brooklyn defense swarmed Curry once he crossed halfcourt, and it made a clear impact on his performance.
With a heavy dose of attention on Curry, other members of the Warriors received open looks. However, they had trouble converting. Against the Nets, Curry’s fellow starters Andrew Wiggins, Kelly Oubre Jr. and Eric Paschall shot 9-of-30 from the field, making only 3-of-12 from beyond the arc. For Curry and Golden State to be effective on the offensive side of the floor, the Warriors will need to develop a secondary scoring threat.
Although Curry shooting numbers weren’t up to par, the 32-year-old flashed a handful of positive moments against Brooklyn. After an extended layoff from the court, Curry looked smooth and healthy moving around the floor. On his way to scoring 16 of his 20 points in the first half, Curry splashed a pair of triples.

Following a forgettable loss, Curry and the Warriors will have a chance to bounce back with a Christmas Day tilt against Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks.
