Warriors select Jonathan Kuminga with No. 7 pick in 2021 NBA draft

With the No. 7 pick in the 2021 NBA draft, the Warriors have officially selected G League Ignite forward Jonathan Kuminga.

After the Oklahoma City Thunder selected Australia’s Josh Giddey with a surprise pick at No. 6, the Golden State Warriors were officially on the clock in the 2021 NBA draft.

With the No. 7 overall pick, Bob Myers, Steve Kerr and the Warriors selected G League Ignite forward Jonathan Kuminga.

During 13 games in the G League bubble in Orlando, Kuminga averaged 15.8 points on 38.7% shooting from the floor with 7.2 rebounds and 2.7 assists in 32.8 minutes per contest.

At 6-foot-8, Kuminga is an explosive athlete with a powerful toolbox of physical skills, but at only 18-years-old, the Warriors will need to be patient while developing their latest draft pick. Golden State’s new-look coaching staff will be challenged with unlocking Kuminga’s true potential.

Over his time with the G League Ignite team, Kuminga shot 24.6% from deep on five 3-pointer attempts per contest. Kuminga struggled from the free-throw stripe in the G League, shooting 62.5%.

While Kuminga develops as a shooter, he could fit in quickly on the defensive side of the floor. With his athleticism, NBA-ready body and 7-foot wingspan, the young forward projects as a versatile defender in the NBA.
