Recapping UT’s wins over LSU Sunday.

A pair of extra-inning walk-off hits netted Tennessee a Southeastern Conference sweep of LSU Sunday.

The day opened with the No. 14 Tigers and No. 9 Volunteers finishing Saturday night’s game. The game was suspended after late-night inclement weather halted things in the ninth inning.

When the game was suspended, LSU had an 8-7 lead. Tennessee tied things in the bottom of the ninth Sunday when Drew Gilbert came up with a game-tying double with two outs.

He would win the game in the 11th with a solo home run to give the Vols a 9-8 win.

Gilbert had two extra-base hits and Evan Russell tied a single-game record with three round-trippers against the Tigers. Luc Lipcius drove in UT’s other run with a bases-loaded walk.

The two teams then concluded the series and the Vols (21-4, 5-1 SEC) claimed a 3-2 victory in eight innings netting a sweep of LSU (16-8, 1-5) at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.

Lipcius, who was mired in a slump and hitting just .211 to start the day, recorded a walk-off RBI single in the eighth inning.

The Vols got on the board in the bottom of the first inning when Gilbert drove in a run when he reached on a fielder’s choice.

After LSU pulled even in the top of the third, the Big Orange answered on Jordan Beck’s RBI groundout.

The Tigers knotted the game 2-2 in the sixth.

On the mound, Vols’ reliever Sean Hunley notched a pair of wins to improve to 4-0 in 2021.

He threw a combined 2.2 innings and surrendered just one hit and two walks in the two games. Hunley had three strikeouts on the day.

He also picked up a save in Tennessee’s 3-1 win during the series opener Friday night.
