Vols roll over Crimson Tide, advance in SEC Tournament

Vols shut down Crimson Tide to advance to semifinals

Tennessee wasted little time exacting getting revenge against Alabama Friday in the Southeastern Conference Tournament.

No. 2 seeded Tennessee dropped its tournament opener to the No. 10 Crimson Tide after UT had the potential winning run nullified by an interference call.

Alabama would go on to prevail 3-2 in extra innings.

The Vols then defeated Mississippi State, 12-2, Thursday before Alabama lost later in the day to Florida.

Those results set up a rematch of the postseason opener for both schools. The result was different as the Vols defeated Alabama, 11-0, at Hoover Metropolitan Stadium in Hoover, Alabama. The game was called after the seventh inning due to the SEC Tournament run rule.

The Vols (44-15) opened its scoring in the second inning when Luc Lipcius hit a two-run homer.

Tennessee scored five more times in the top of the third as Max Ferguson had an RBI double. Drew Gilbert drove in a run when he collected a hit. Lipcius and Pete Derkay each chipped in with scoring singles in the frame and Evan Russell scored when Jordan Beck reached on an error by the Crimson Tide (31-24).

The Big Orange scored its last four runs as Russell had a two-run homer. Liam Spence and Ferguson hit solo home runs in the sixth inning for the Vols.

Tennessee freshman pitcher Blade Tidwell improved to 8-3 on the season as he posted a stellar meeting on the mound. He threw six innings, surrendering two hits, two walks and recorded five strikeouts.

Kirby Connell pitched the seventh and struck out one Alabama hitter.

The Vols will take on Florida in the tournament semifinals Saturday at 1 p.m. EDT.
