Vols produce 20 hits to outlast UNC Greensboro

Recapping UT’s win over UNC Greensboro Saturday.

Multiple comebacks and a six-run sixth inning helped Tennessee prevail Saturday night at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.

The No. 14 Volunteers fell behind early before storming back to claim a 14-9 series clinching victory over UNC Greensboro.

Tennessee (13-3) pounded out 20 hits against the Spartans (10-4).

Greensboro scored first as it tallied three times in the top of the second as Josh Madole clubbed a two-run homer and Dallas Callahan had an RBI single.

Jackson Greer drove in UT’s first run with a sacrifice fly that pulled the Big Orange to within 3-1. Liam Spence tripled home Jake Rucker to trim Tennessee’s deficit to 3-2. Spence came in with the tying run when Pete Derkay singled.

A four-run third extended the Spartans’ lead to 7-3 before Luc Lipcius blasted a solo home run in the fourth. Jordan Beck added an RBI single an inning later before things got wild in the bottom of the sixth.

Max Ferguson had an RBI triple and Lipcius had a two-run single. Beck drew a bases-loaded walk. Gilbert had a scoring single and Greer drove in a run when he grounded out.

In the seventh, Rucker stole home while Derkay and Gilbert came up with RBI singles.

The Spartans scored a pair in the ninth.

Derkay finished the contest with four hits. Rucker, Lipcius and Gilbert collected three hits each. Russell had two hits and scored two runs and Greer drove in two runs for Tennessee, which will go for the series sweep Sunday.
