Tennessee and Virginia will play each other in the College World Series on Sunday.
Sunday’s contest will mark the first meeting between the two schools.
The Cavaliers, like Tennessee, have enjoyed periods of success throughout their program’s history. Virginia won the College World Series in 2015 and were runners-up in Omaha, Nebraska the previous season.
Virginia first fielded a baseball team in 1889.
Virginia is making its fifth appearance in the College World Series. The Cavaliers have played in the NCAA Tournament 18 times and have appeared in the College World Series during the 2009, 2011, 2014 and 2015 seasons.
Virginia has won the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament three times (1996, 2009, 2011) and captured the league’s regular season championship in 1972, 2010 and 2011.
The Cavaliers have produced a number of Major League Baseball players including Washington’s Ryan Zimmerman and the Dodgers’ Chris Taylor, who are still playing.
Zimmerman and the Nationals won the World Series in 2019. Taylor and Los Angeles won the 2020 World Series.
A pair of former Cavaliers have played for the Tennessee Smokies in recent years before moving on to the majors.
Mark Reynolds and Brandon Guyer once played for the Smokies.
