Vols’ football search: Coaches with both head coaching experience and ties to Tennessee

Mike Houston — East Carolina head coach

Houston has served as head coach for East Carolina, James Madison, The Citadel and Lenoir-Rhyne, compiling a 87-39 record and winning the 2016 NCAA Division I FCS football national championship.

Houston was hired by East Carolina’s Director of Athletics Jon Gilbert.

Gilbert served as executive senior associate athletics director from 2011-16 under Dave Hart at Tennessee.

He is a graduate of Lenoir-Rhyne College in Hickory, North Carolina. Tennessee men’s basketball head coach Rick Barnes is also a graduate of Lenoir-Rhyne College.
