Vols’ football history 1905-1906: Head coach J.D. Depree

KNOXVILLE — University of Tennessee football is rich in tradition and Vols Wire will explore the history of the program by examining each head coach’s tenure at UT.

This installment will focus on the 1905 and 1906 seasons and head coach J.D. Depree.

Depree, a Michigan graduate, compiled a record of 4-11-3 during his two-year tenure at Tennessee.

During his first year in 1905, he guided the Vols to a 3-5-1 record, matching the mark of his predecessor, S.D. Crawford, who coached Tennessee for just one season.

Depree did not get a signature win at Tennessee, although the Vols did claim a 104-0 victory over American University of Harriman. The Vols opened the year with a 16-6 victory over Tennessee School for the Deaf.

Tennessee also beat Centre College, 31-5. The Vols scored 162 points in 1905 as 104 came in the win over American University, that output was an all-time high for UT.

In 1906, the Vols notched a 10-0 victory over American University. Tennessee, however, did not win another game, losing to Maryville, Centre, Sewanee, Kentucky A&M, Clemson and Alabama.

American University tied the Vols in a rematch later in the season. Tennessee also played Georgia to a 0-0 tie.
