Vols defeat Belmont in regular season home finale

Recapping UT’s baseball win over Belmont.

In its final regular season home game of the 2021 campaign, Tennessee had to come from behind to defeat Belmont at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.

The No. 4 Volunteers, coming off a Southeastern Conference series loss to No. 1 Arkansas, bounced back into the win column with an 11-2 win.

The Vols (40-13) had to overcome a 1-0 deficit as the Bruins (20-29) took a 1-0 lead on an RBI single by Brodey Heaton,

Belmont remained in front until the Vols pulled even in the third as Max Ferguson’s groundout plated Jorel Ortega with the tying run.

Tennessee sophomore right fielder Jordan Beck clubbed a three-run homer over the right-center field fence to give the Vols a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth.

After Belmont scored its final run of the game in the fifth, Tennessee came up  with three more runs in the bottom of the frame as Evan Russell drove in a run with a groundout. Drew Gilbert stole home and Beck collected another RBI with an infield single.

The Vols extended its advantage to 8-2 in the sixth as Jake Rucker had a scoring single.

Beck went deep again in the seventh as he crushed a two-run homer to left. Trey Lipscomb knocked in the final run of the contest with a groundout in the eighth.

On the mound, Camden Sewell improved to 3-0, pitching three innings of relief. Sewell, one of eight pitchers used by UT in the game, yielded one run, one hit and one walk. He struck out two.

For the Bruins, Knoxville product and Grace Christian Academy graduate Will Jenkins started and took the loss.

The freshman dropped to 1-1 on the season, surrendering six runs, five hits and four walks. He struck out two Vols in 4.1 innings pitched.
