No. 4 Tennessee (15-1) defeated Rhode Island (0-13) Sunday to complete a three-game sweep of the Rams.
The Volunteers overcame an early deficit to defeat Rhode Island, 12-3, on a cold day at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.
It was the seventh consecutive victory for Tennessee.
The Vols trailed 1-0 in the top of the first of the first inning.
Tennessee, which had 16 hits in the series finale, took the lead in the bottom of the first inning, 4-1.
Trey Lipscomb had a two-run double and Jorel Ortega had an RBI single. Luc Lipcius drove in the Vols’ fourth run of the contest with a sacrifice fly.
The Rams pulled to within 4-3 on a two-run home run by Anthony DePino in the fourth inning.
The Vols tallied five times in the fifth inning and added three more runs in the seventh.
Jordan Beck went 5-for-5 and scored two runs for the Tennessee.
Luc Lipcius went 1-for-1 with a home run, two walks and two runs. Lipscomb was 1-for-3 with a run and three RBIs.
Jared Dickey was 3-for-5 with two doubles, a triple, two runs and one RBI.
Starting pitcher Drew Beam (3-0) earned the win for the Vols. He went 5.2 innings, surrendering three runs, three hits and two walks. Beam recorded five strikeouts.
Mark McLaughlin had three strikeouts, while yielding one hit in 1.1 innings.
Jake Fitzgibbons and Drew Patterson each pitched one inning of scoreless relief for Tennessee.
