Vols’ commit Tiyon Evans is ‘special with the football in his hands’

Vols’ commit Tiyon Evans is special with the football in his hands.

HUTCHINSON – Tiyon Evans, a 5-foot-9, 210-pound running back, committed to the Vols on April 30.

He is the No. 1-ranked JUCO running back in the 2021 class from Hutchinson Community College in Hutchinson, Kansas.

Drew Dallas was promoted to head coach for Hutchinson on Dec. 31, 2019. He served as the team’s offensive coordinator in 2019 and will remain in the role while taking over as head coach.

In Hutchinson’s offense under the direction of Dallas, Evans totaled 538 rushing yards on 61 attempts and scored nine touchdowns in 12 contests during the 2019 season. The future Vol also recorded four receptions for 43 yards and scored one touchdown.

“Tiyon fits in schematically to what we are doing,” Dallas told Vols Wire of the future Tennessee running back. “He is going to fit in schematically really anywhere because he is a heck of an athlete.”

Evans is a versatile player and has the ability to make defenders miss with power and by lowering his shoulder.

“Tiyon is a back that can do a lot of different things,” Dallas said. “We motion him out of the backfield, give him the ball in space, he has great hands and is consistent with them. He is pretty fluid.

“We did not ask him to run a ton of routes down the field and things like that, but just trying to identify mismatches to where we can get him the ball in space, and him into a one-on-one situation, because he is very hard to bring down with one defender. He has great vision. His speed is very good for a running back, so getting him into space and doing some things with him that way to identify those matchups benefited him and our offense a ton.”

Hutchinson’s offense has been multiple with RPO concepts under Dallas. Its offense features inside and outside zone to go along with power and counter schemes.

Dallas mentioned that Evans “will fit in schematically to what Tennessee does” offensively.

In the kick return game, Evans produced 608 yards and two touchdowns on 18 attempts. His longest kick return in 2019 went for 95 yards.
